Day 23 – Quinoa Cereal – 365 Days of Baby Food

Did you know that besides soy, quinoa is a source of complete protein? It contains all the essential amino acids that our bodies need and, it makes a wonderful addition to your baby’s diet. Just 1 cup contains approximately 22 grams of protein. For a super nutritious protein packed meal, make the family a Quinoa Pilaf by using the cooking method below and then adding in veggies such as carrots, peas and summer squash.  The recipe is in the Wholesome Baby Food Guide book.

If you have never cooked quinoa before, you may be a bit frightened off by the cooked result. My kids call quinoa the alien grain because when it cooks, it “pops” into spirals and discs.. You can see this in the photo on the bottom-right of the collage.

Quinoa is an ancient grain that has been grown in South America for thousands of year. The Incas considered quinoa the “Mother Grain”. Even though the Incas did not know anything about complete proteins, they knew that this little grain was truly a wonderful life sustainer!
