One of the best things about making large batches of homemade baby food in your slow cooker is that you can freeze the leftovers to pull out on hectic days. This means that a few minutes of prep time combined with a few hours of (hands-off) cooking time can result in a freezer stocked with healthy, homemade baby food that’s ready when your baby is. It’s especially convenient to freeze your baby food in serving sizes corresponding to his stage.
Stage One: Freeze food in one-ounce portions to reduce waste. A standard ice cube tray is perfect for this. You could also use any container that is freezer safe. Once frozen, transfer the food into freezer-safe bags and label the bags with the date and the name of the food. Store in the back of the freezer for three to six months.
Stage Two: Freeze food in two- to four-ounce containers, depending on your baby’s appetite. You can also use large ice cube trays. Once frozen, transfer the food into freezer-safe bags and label the bags with the date and the name of the food. Store in the back of the freezer for three to six months.
Stage Three: Freeze leftovers in a large freezer-safe resealable plastic bag and label with the date and the name of the food. You may want to freeze different foods from the same meal in separate freezer bags or containers. For example, if you have leftover Italian Wedding Soup (recipe coming soon!), freeze some of the meatballs separately to be used later as part of a meal or mixed in with other foods; I love combining the meatballs with mac-n-cheese. Store in the back of the freezer for three to six months.
